Vanessa Shinsei Kazan
Birthday: March 5
Age: 18 when arrived
Height: 5'5”
Category: Wanderer
Abilities: Raised in a church, she is capable of using sacred powers and can empower weapons with the strength of light. However, she knows only how to wield a katana, specializing in precise single strikes. Her teacher was also able to use magic and taught her a little of that as well, with one of them being a simple shrinking spell to hide her sword as a rosary, which she wears around her neck. She does not know how he was capable of wielding both so powerfully.
Personal items: She wields the katana of her recently deceased master, Johnny McKean. She keeps a jester doll and a strange flask that hangs from her belt, which holds a liquid that continually emits a white light that is soft on the eyes. She also has a torn half of a picture with a smiling man with jet black hair who is embracing someone on the other half with one arm. She has another picture of a man with stunning blue hair. Johnny also gave her a pistol, “just in case”.
Description: Eyes are black, perhaps the only genetic inheritance from her father. Physically, she takes after her mother in every other way. She wears black cargo pants on most occasions instead of the skirt. She also has a British accent, picked up from her master, who was the one that taught her English.
Personality: When dealing with new people, her usual disposition is one of timid formality. She often keeps to herself, but when she is with a friend she speaks up. As she is now out in the real world on her own, she is currently very cautious of what she does and who she speaks to. She was raised in a church, so there are some mannerisms that she is not used to. Knowing that someone out there wants her dead, she must be careful with who she confides in.
Background/History: For as long as she could remember, she had been raised in the church by Johnny McKean, a priest at a Catholic church and stepfather, and, from time to time, other parishioners. Located in Japan, she was taught English in the church and Japanese in school, eventually becoming fluent in both. At around eight, Johnny began teaching her how to wield a katana as well as further delving into holiness and magic, separate from what was normally taught to parishioners on Sundays. She eventually became pious herself and began studying.
At fourteen, however, she asked him if he knew anything about her father, her mother, or anyone she was related to. At this time Johnny produced a torn picture, telling her that this man was her father and that he knew him like a brother. Her mother had died giving birth to her, but this man knew that something was wrong, eventually being able to trace the cause to the enemies of his wife's parents. Knowing that he and his daughter could not live peacefully while they still existed, he left Vanessa with Johnny and set out with a heavy heart to eradicate the dangers, peacefully if he could but violently if he must, leaving to Johnny only the name that her mother wanted. However, he removed his own surname and changed her middle and last name to Shinsei Kazan, her mother's full name.
Johnny also took out a second photo, a young man who did not look that much younger than her father, and was told that this was her uncle, Unmei, a powerful transfiguration wizard. Upon learning of his sister's death, he had also set out seeking revenge. Since that night, he had not heard from them since and only wishes for the best.
At some point afterwards, Vanessa began to question whether the actions of her father and uncle were right or not. She was eventually able to decide that Unmei's actions were acceptable, but was unable to find a clear answer for her father. One side of her felt that it was necessary; the other felt wronged, believing that her father's first obligation was to his child.
One night, a month after her eighteenth birthday, the church where she resided with Johnny was attacked. While she managed to survive unscathed, Johnny, whom many in the line of duty considered old for an active member, was mortally wounded. With his dying breaths he bestowed onto her his memory of Kironin Central and how to get there, telling her that this was where her parents first met. After some time of mourning, she began her journey to follow an eighteen-year old trail, hoping that at the end of it she'll have come up with an answer to the question of her father.
Desire: To find her father. What she'll do when she does, however, is unknown to her for the time being.
Extras: A full-grown pet gray wolf follows her. He protected her on the night that church was attacked and has stubbornly followed her despite multiple tries to leave him behind. Since then she has taken him in and named him Juno. According to her, he displays intelligence that, at times, is on the level equal to that of a human...
Also, Vanessa does not know her true ethnicity, but considers herself to essentially be full Japanese. Japanese is also her natural language.
Deep down inside, Vanessa is secretly afraid that her father gave her to Johnny because he didn't want her. It created an insecurity within her and she feels she is never good enough. As a result, she does her best to show that she is just as capable as anyone else, sometimes with disastrous results.
(Longer profile than I thought I would make...)
