Abilities:
Kai is usually a normal person. He can run faster than a lot of other people and he knows a little bit of kung fu. He but other than that he has no supernatural abilities. Kai loves cooking and can pull any recipe out of his head for a great meal.
He has another side who awakens whenever Kai is unconscious. When this happens, Kai turns into a manipulating assassin. He becomes skilled with using throwing knives and daggers.
Kai also becomes able to turn himself and anything that he is touching into a mist so thin that most people can not see it. In this form he can move around his surroundings quickly and silently. However, he can't do anything else until he becomes solid again.
Personal Items:
Kai is completely broke so he usually resorts to stealing food. His only belongings are a bowl, a fork, and two kunai knives. He carries these in a bag slung over his shoulder.

Kai usually just wears whatever he sees first so he always ends up in weird clothes.
Personality:
When normal he is sociable and friendly. Kai loves making jokes and keeping people entertained but he can also get too sleepy to even move. When Kai's not falling asleep he is attentive and will keep track of every detail. Kai is very curious, if anyone even mentions a rumor he perks up and his attention is peaked. However, he himself is very discrete. He often chooses his words carefully and doesn't lose his temper easily.
Beneath the surface, not everything Kai says is true. He has a difficult time getting to trust other people and will put on a facade of friendliness around people he doesn't trust. Kai keeps his secrets to himself and only reveals them to very close friends. Even though he's sociable he would rather stay on his own then get too cozy with others.
He is uncomfortable around people with power and would rather find ways to undermine them then try to be friendly with them. He believes that those who have any control over others can absolutely not be trusted.
His other side has a much different personality. He will talk to people with the sole purpose of gaining something from then. Otherwise he stays mostly silent, though sometimes he will provoke others for a fight. Usually, he will be very cold towards everyone. Kai's other side is much calmer and even harder to provoke. He does not get into fights unless he thinks he can either get away safely or win. If he does start fighting however, he becomes merciless. A fight will not end until either he it gets too dangerous for him or his enemy becomes motionless.
Background/History:
Kai was born in a small town in the middle of an island.
As a child Kai began developing a split personality. No one could figure out why. One moment he would be crying and the next moment he would be completely silent. His family, consisting of his father and his brother, cared for him until he was 12 years old. They sent him to several psychiatrists but nothing seemed to cure him. In the end they declared that Kai had wide mood swings and gave him some ineffective medication. Kai's mother died when he was less than a year old. On his 12th birthday his family vanished. At first he thought their car might have broken down but after a few days went by he realized that they weren't coming back.
Kai then went out and began his thieving spree by breaking in shops for money. This didn't go well for long and he was captured by the owner of a small time restaurant. The owner was very sympathetic hired the child as a busboy. The owner would end up taking care of him for the next 5 years. He was a caring and diligent father figure but not very wealthy. As a consequence Kai did not go to a good school and had trouble finding work outside of the restaurant. After a few years the owner decided that Kai was old enough to cook and began teaching him cooking recipes. In only a few months Kai was already one of the restaurant's top chefs. Unfortunately for him, the staff was filled with people who needed employment and who only saw him as competition. Even more, his family had restricted him from meeting many other people due to a fear that his mood swings would cause him to become an outcast and ruin the restaurant's reputation. The result eventually became a deep distrust of everyone Kai met. People were strange creatures to him; sometimes they were the most caring things in the world, and other times they seem to worry about nothing but their selves.
During this entire time his personality switches slowly became less frequent. Eventually it reached the point where it only happened when Kai became unconscious. Since the two have no memory of the others' actions, Kai never found out that he had another side to him. Even more, his mind only actually begins resting when both sides go to sleep, which meant that he would get a few hours of sleep most nights. His other side kept himself from conversing with anyone. He didn't like to talk with people. To him there was no reason to. His only entertainment was tossing around kitchen knives , never getting caught despite the chefs complaining of dented utensils. No one suspected Kai because they didn't think he would do it for no reason.
Eventually the owner of the restaurant decided that it was time for Kai to get to know the world outside of the tiny town that he was born in. He gave Kai several wads of bills and spent the next few weeks teaching him how to survive. On the day of his departure, Kai waved goodbye to everyone he knew. The owner gave him a bag full of kitchen utensils as a souvenir. Kai was sad to leave but also excited about visiting other places.
Unfortunately, he wasn't as effective as learning the lessons about the outside world as he was about cooking and became completely broke. For his next few weeks Kai traveled the island, lugging a cart and stealing food whenever he could. During his travels he began to hear about a place called Kironin Central. It was a place full of wonders and dreams. Everyone who went there supposedly became famous and successful. What's more, he even heard that it was a school full of rich people. Kai quickly found the destination and spent his small stash of savings on a raft and set off for Kironin Central.
Desires: Kai came to Kironin central wanting to learn as much as he could so that he could be successful wherever he goes. He also wants to find hints of where his family might be. Though, since he has a new family whom he feels much closer to, this is less important than his main goal, which is to become famous and be able to return successful and rich to the restaurant to prove his gratitude.
Throughout Kai's entire life, money has been of huge importance. Without it there would be no way he could have ever survived. As a result he can be greedy and get persuaded easily by money. Money is second to learning; it is much a smaller but eminent desire.
